The ACCC has as its stated purpose Making markets work for consumers, now and in the future. Over many years its courageous pursuit of competitive markets and consumer protection have earned it much admiration (and some envy) from other regulators in the region and the world. Now, alongside its international peers, it is facing the daunting challenge of how a nation-state effectively regulates a global digital marketplace dominated by a handful of giant players, whether it be around markets for digital advertising technology, markets for digital platform services or the impact of the platforms on the entire eco-system within which news and journalism are produced, distributed and consumed.
